We are thrilled to announce our York Lindy Weekender with the amazing Katie Cobalt and Mike Sonder! We will have a day of incredible teaching and dancing, as well as a day of flying high with aerials! You can purchase tickets for just one day or the whole weekend! Tickets for either days workshop will include access to the social dance on Saturday evening.
Schedule
Saturday Workshop
- Workshop 1 from 11am-1pm
- Lunch 1pm-2pm
- Workshop 2 from 2pm - 4pm
- Cultural talk 4pm-5pm
The Saturday workshops will be perfect for anyone who wants to take their Lindy up to the next level, with a great opportunity to learn from this incredible teaching duo who love to share their passion for the history of jazz!
It is assumed that all attendees are comfortable social dancing 6 count, 8 count and Charleston ideas (not suitable for newer dancers). You are comfortable varying up your dancing, and enjoy broadening your vocabulary. You want to take on some new challenges, work on your technique and expand your individual expression in your dancing.
Saturday All-Levels Social Dance: featuring Blind Tiger
- Social open to all levels, 7:30pm - 11:30pm
Join us in the evening for a social dance, open to dancers of all levels! We'll be joined by the Blind Tiger band for some fantastic live music, and an incredible dance floor to dance on.
You can buy a social pass if you are only planning to attend the social dance.
Sunday Aerials
- Aerials Workshop 1 from 1:30pm - 3:30pm
- Break: 3:30pm - 4:15pm
- Aerials Workshop 2 from 4:15pm - 6:15pm
The Sunday workshop will include 4 hours of classic Lindy Hop aerials. These will be where a base (lead) offers support to a flyer (follow), whose feet will leave the floor. You will need to sign up with a partner(s) as we will not be rotating in class, and won’t be matchmaking on the day. If you would like to attend aerials and do not have a partner please email contact@yorklindy.co.uk and we will try our best to pair up those interested.
The first half will work on some introductory aerials where the flyer will not go upside down, and is a good baseline to work on your fundamentals. The second half will demonstrate some more advanced aerials where flyers will go upside down. The workshop is suitable for beginners to aerials. There is no pressure to go past your point of comfort, as we recognise that everyone is at a different stage of their aerial journey.
Teachers Intro
Katie Cobalt
Katie Cobalt is a full-time international Lindy Hop instructor - originally from Hong Kong but via London. She is well known for her classroom energy, dancefloor sass, and infectious enthusiasm for Lindy Hop. When it comes to dance, she deeply values self expression and fully committing to the idea. As a teacher, she focuses on individually helping her students on their own dance journeys and finds so much joy in seeing them grow.
Katie holds first place titles at Savoy Cup, Balkan Lindy Hop Championships, and Dragon Swing. While she continues to throw down in international competitions, Katie most highly values the joy and playful spirit that made her fall head over heels for Lindy Hop.
Mike Sonder
Mike strives to create a learning environment that is fun, challenging and inclusive. The goal is for each individual student to find their next step forward and enjoy that process of growth. Mike loves seeing students’ eyes light up when they understand a concept or feel a movement work naturally in their body for the first time.
Mike has taught in 21 countries and counting. He currently teaches Lindy Hop, Air Steps (aerials), Solo Jazz and many different Blues styles. Mike has not only placed in and won respected competitions across multiple genres, but also thrown down hard in unofficial late night dance-offs.
Mike lives and breathes dance. He is constantly honing his skills and developing new ideas. If you run into him at a grocery store, an airport, a museum or a mountain top, you’ll probably catch him dancing!
